Continuous learning is a distinctive offering and advantage at WarrenAverett + GH&I. It keeps us relevant in the changing world around us.
Our commitment to provide continuous learning resulted in the establishment of a Chief Learning Officer (CLO) position; and today’s CLO has been with the firm in a training capacity since 2001. The CLO, who is a CPA and professional coach, coordinates and instructs internal and external continuing education courses, provides employee coaching, and facilitates organizational development sessions.
Development begins at hiring; and each new employee receives a customized orientation and training program, suited to their education, experience, and position with the firm. Their individualized training period may range from 1 day to 2 weeks in a formal setting, and then be followed by additional learning informally with peers.
Each new employee is also assigned a “buddy/mentor” during their first year to help acclimate them to their practice group members and others in the firm, as well as answer questions about working at GH&I. And throughout the year, 150-200 classes are held in the firm’s state of the art classroom. Topics focus on industry technical knowledge, computer applications, and core skills of the profession. The firm’s goal is to meet the professional development needs of all teammates so they each continue to be experts in their chosen field.
Career Planning
We have a structured approach to career planning through the offering of career guidelines and individualized career plans. The guidelines outline the firm’s expectations of employees; and the career plans allow each employee, based on their individual interests, to identify specific annual goals and action items for reaching them. An employee will meet annually with their supervising partner and the chief learning officer to discuss their plan and overall development. In addition, a performance appraisal is conducted annually for each employee so they may discuss and review their overall career development. This appraisal is framed to be a coaching opportunity in their career and professional development journey.
